Jan De Sarno Named Fred Tuttle Award Winner![]() On December 19, the South Burlington Rotary Club concluded 2019 with three inspiring moments at its regular meeting at the Doubletree by Hilton. The morning began with the presentation of the Club’s Frederick H. Tuttle Award, an honor named for Fred Tuttle, former South Burlington School Department superintendent who, himself, was an exemplary educator and community-minded individual. This honor is bestowed each year upon an individual who has made significant contributions in South Burlington and beyond. Recent recipients include Jake Agna, Patrick Burke, Sally Borden, Nancy Lavarnway, Don Cummings and Leslie Griffiths. The 2019 recipient is Jan DeSarno, a tireless and inspirational gardener, particularly as coordinator of the Grandma and Grandpa Garden and the Young Gardener Summer Program at the Vermont Garden Park on Dorset Street. Nominated for this award by Doris VanMullen, Mary Scollins, Charlie Nardozzi, Nancy Bell, Jack Webb, Donald Balcom, Peter Carmolli and Carol McQuillen, Jan was recognized for her outstanding work on the youth gardening program that introduces children to gardening, conservation, protection of wildlife, recognition of plants, tress and shrubs, basic flower arranging and a love and appreciation of nature. The Tuttle award includes a $250 donation to a charity of Jan’s choice, permanent recognition along with other recipients on a plaque at City Hall and a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of her commitment to local education programs as well as other beautification projects throughout our area. Following the Award presentation, Club members and guests were treated to a special holiday concert by members of the South Burlington High School Chorus, led by their conductor Aimee Bushey. The young men and women perform challenging music, often in different languages, with professional grace and style. The Rotary Club looks forward every year to these performances that make the holiday season more beautiful and meaningful. And, last but not least, the morning concluded with the presentation of a wide assortment of cheerily wrapped presents provided by Club members to the Howard Center so children there may have a touch of joy this season. |
Helping the YMCAThis morning we celebrated! Five area Rotary clubs came together to present a check for $9000 to the Greater Burlington YMCA to provide scholarships for swimming lessons. Clubs from South Burlington, Burlington Sunrise, Burlington, Essex, and Colchester-Milton banded together and wrote a grant to recognize the needs of children and families in our area. Kyle Dodson the CEO of the Greater Burlington Y accepted the generous donation. Kyle shared with our clubs about the ground breaking of the YMCA’s new 50,000 building. As Kyle described it, the building will be state of the art, housing a new pool, fitness facility, gym, track, studios and 10,000 square feet of much needed early education classrooms. He shared how the Y impacts the communities we represent, and told stories of how everyone is welcomed at the Y. This long standing organization is deeply rooted in our community and brings people together- much like Rotary. It is great when we can help one another better serve our neighbors. ![]() |

Nominations for Fred Tuttle Award are OpenIt is time to nominate a deserving community member for the Fred Tuttle Award. Each year the South Burlington Rotary Club presents this award in order to recognize individuals who like Fred go beyond the expected, bringing extraordinary zeal and integrity to everything in which they are involved while enhancing the South Burlington community at large. (quote from the plaque)
In simplest terms, the criteria are that the nominee must live or work in South Burlington and have contributed significantly in some way to their vocation. The committee considers such factors as how the nominee's actions have benefited their profession, how long he or she had been involved in their vocation and whether the individual exemplifies the Rotarian ideals.
A quick word as to the history of the naming of the award. Prior to his death, the Club presented Mr. Frederick Tuttle with a Paul Harris Fellow for his contributions to the community. Fred served as Superintendent of the South Burlington Schools from 1971 to 1992. Mr. Tuttle died after a courageous battle with cancer on May 14, 1992. Since then, the Middle School has been renamed the Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School. He also served as principal of the South Burlington Middle School for many years. The club's sentiment is that Mr. Tuttle exemplified the ideals of what this award is intended to recognize. As such the award is named "The Frederick H. Tuttle Memorial Award" in his memory.
A plaque commemorating the past recipients of the award is placed in City Hall - it includes the names of all prior recipients and will include all future recipients. Also, a $250 contribution is made by Rotary to the charity of their choice.
Applications can be download on the left side of the Rotary website. Application deadline is November 2, 2017. |
