Each year Rotary District 7850 conducts a speech contest to help youth, community and Rotarians understand, encourage and foster the principles and values of Rotary.  Principles like the Service Above Self, the 4-Way Test (see below) and the annual theme of Rotary International are used for speech topics. This year’s topic is:

 

Why is Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Important? - Prepare & Deliver a five-minute speech which relates this topic to your life, school and Rotary values.  High School Age Students Only.  Memorization not required.   

 

2023 Cash prizes up to $1,750

 

The 2023 speech contest prizes break down as follows:

 

Club Round 1 – Prize $200 - Compete against other South Burlington residents on February 15, 7:00pm, location in South Burlington to be determined.  

 

Area Round 2 – Prize $300  - Round 1 winners Compete against area students in March at a time and location to be determined (prior to March 15 in Northern Vermont).

 

District Round 3 – Prize $500 for the Two Finalists  - Up to ten other contestants from other Areas’ Round 2 Contests at Rotary District 7850 Assembly held Sat April 1, 2023 at Northern VT University, Lyndonville, VT.  Estimated time 10am-2pm.

 

District Round 4 – Prize $750 Winner & Prize $500 Runner-Up - Two Contestants from Round 3 will speak at Rotary District 7850 Conference held Saturday April 29, 2023 at Jay Peak Resort, Jay Peak VT. Estimated time 11am-1pm.

  • Contest Poster - Defines the theme of the speech, location, time and prizes.

  • Registration Form - Must be filled out and submitted to the South Burlington Speech Contest Chair (defined on the form)

  • Contest Rules - Defines contest details, eligibility and contest rules.

  • Judge Score Sheet - Outlines how speeches will be graded so contestants know what to focus on.
