An update on The Tibetan Association of Vermont

Tibetan community in Vermont was founded in 1993 with few individual members; now consisted with hundred and twenty three members. To actively promote and support human rights and democratic freedoms in Tibet. To preserve and promote Tibetan Culture, heritage and religion. To liase with and support the Tibetan Government in exile through the Office of Tibet, New York, USA. Our mission is to contribute to and uphold the American value of multiculturalism. To work together to build innovative, productive and peaceful American Tibetan Communities in US. To Initiate and maintain unity among Tibetan Organizations in North America. Mrs. Cummings is President of the Association.

An update on Save the Children

A dedicated humanitarian, Katia Vieira de Moraes LaCasse, M.D., was born in São Paulo, Brazil, and received her medical degree from Faculdade de Medicina do ABC in 2004 and completed a pediatric residency in 2010 at Santa Casa de Misericordia de São Paulo. After several years working as a pediatric hospitalist and running a private pediatric practice, Vieira de Moraes LaCasse embarked on her first humanitarian deployment to Afghanistan with Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF). The experience had an immense impact on her and changed her life trajectory. "After my six months in Afghanistan, I returned home to Brazil, quit both my jobs and closed my private practice. I could not fathom going back to work in private hospitals when I knew how much help was needed in humanitarian contexts," she says. "I set out to dedicate my life to humanitarian work full time." Three years ago, after additional MSF deployments to South Sudan, as well as Save the Children deployments to Colombia, Syria, Haiti, and Dominican Republic, Vieira de Moraes LaCasse moved to Vermont. Currently serving as the clinical lead for the Emergency Health Unit at Save the Children U.S., she decided to pursue a Master of Public Health degree at UVM to "add more tools to her arsenal to provide better responses and affect policy development". https://www.savethechildren.org/

Howard Center, in partnership with the South Burlington Rotary Club, invites the public to the 13th Annual Curling Classic fundraiser, on March 15, 2025, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event is organized by the South Burlington Rotary Club and is an ongoing collaboration between Howard Center, South Burlington Food Shelf, the Green Mountain Curling Club, the Rutland Rocks Curling Club, and once again, continues its annual tradition of goodhearted competition. The 2025 Curling Classic, held at Cairns Arena, will see participation from over thirty teams, bringing together individuals from various sectors of the community to curl for a cause. Last year’s event successfully raised over $40,000 for Howard Center and several other organizations. The day-long competition not only focuses on curling prowess but also celebrates creativity and community spirit, with teams competing for awards in categories such as best team name, most creative costume, and most spirited team, in addition to top fundraising achievements. The Green Mountain Curling Club, with assistance from the Rutland Rocks Curling Club, will provide expertise, instruction, and equipment for the event with their roster of curling volunteers. Michael Keller and John Wilking, members of the South Burlington Rotary Curling committee, emphasized the importance of the Curling Classic in supporting community initiatives. “This event is an example of how collaborative efforts can enhance our community’s well-being.” said Keller. “We are proud to host this event, which not only raises essential funds and awareness for local organizations but also promotes team spirit and camaraderie among the participants, many who are playing on behalf of their company or organization while doing something good for the community,” he said. The funds will directly benefit Howard Center’s client funds program which supports basic needs and enrichment activities for people served by the agency and will also support critical crisis services. “The annual Curling Classic reflects our community’s support and generosity. We are grateful to the South Burlington Rotary Club for their service and everything they do to give back,” said Denise Vignoe, director of development and communications at Howard Center. “It helps make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families we serve,” Vignoe said. What he learned by walking across America

In 1999 and 2000 Rick, inspired by 89-year-old “Granny D’s” 18-month walk across the entire United States to highlight the need for campaign finance reform, walked with her for a week in Kentucky. Subsequently Rick walked some 450 miles around 3 sides of Vermont to similarly advocate through interviews with more than 50 radio, newspaper and television discussions and stories as they covered his journey. More recently he has joined other activists to support efforts by Lawrence Lessig and The New Hampshire Rebellion to encourage NH voters to ask 2016 Presidential primary candidates the question: “What specific reforms will you advance to end the corrupting influence of big money in politics?” As part of these efforts Rick has:

Check-in begins at 1 p.m., and the Walk kicks off at 2 p.m. Walkers head down the Church Street Marketplace, up Main Street and into surrounding neighborhoods. Along the way, walkers are invited to stop outside each of COTS’ numerous buildings. We'll have interactive and up-close looks at our shelters, housing, and program spaces.
